YELLING & SHOUTING
Yelling and shouting is not the way to solve a problem. Shouting at the children or your spouse is only a way to vent your own anger on them and it achieves nothing you are trying to do to solve your problem. When you yell at your spouse he or she will clam up or shout back or even walk away, so it's easy to see that communication has nothing to do with shouting or yelling at people. SO WHY DO IT?
As a counselor, I see many mothers who tell me, "My children (or spouse) will not listen to me unless I yell." But these same mothers tell me that after yelling at their kids for some time, their children yell back at them. You see yelling at people doesn't achieve your goal of having them listen and pay attention. To change that situation, try speaking to them in a calm voice. Don't show anger. You will find children do, indeed, mimic what they hear. So be careful how you say what you say. Your tone of voice shows your emotion. Remain calm, but firm, when directing your kids.
When you do feel a need to shout or yell, go to a ball game. A lot of other people will join you in shouting. You might even shout at each other - and have fun!
The trouble in the world and in the family is due to a breakdown in communication with each other. Peace never comes to us by name calling or shouting. It will take a little while to break the habit of yelling and shouting - but stick with it. You may not see immediate results, but in time you will notice the response you get from others is different than what you got from the anger response. Be determined to make the change.
Don't yell and shout. Being a good communicator is a priceless gift that will yield peace in the valley, instead of the war in the trenches you are experiencing.
You can do it. Happy communicating!
